“Windows XP Embedded was selected as the OS for this project primarily for rapid development.  At the design stage we considered using embedded Linux, but we soon realised that it would take far longer to complete the project due to the additional work involved.

Driver support was another key consideration for our project.  The project required a USB-CAN converter that already had Windows XP drivers.  XPe allowed us to utilise existing drivers, sidestepping the additional development costs and timescales involved in writing a custom device driver.

To allow us to focus entirely on the application code, we asked Wordsworth to develop the XPe image for our target.  We were then able to use our in-house resources in parallel to develop and test the application using Visual Studio on our standard XP Professional development PCs.
